Abstract

ABSTRACT: Plant-animal interactions, present themselves through so-called disharmonious or antagonistic relationships, and harmonics or cooperation. Taking into account antagonistic relationships, herbivory is the most importante, affecting the leaves (folivory), flowers (florivory), fruits (frugivory) and seeds (granivory). Environmental factors, among them plant density and interaction with ants, can directly interfere in herbivory rates. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence and intensity of herbivory in isolated and dense individuals of Macroptilium lathyroides in anthropized area. The research was carried out in an adjacent area of the State University of Alagoas, located in the municipality of Palmeira dos Índios – AL, area with signs of anthropic disturbance, the vegetation presents characteristics of transition between the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga. The studied species was M. lathyroides an herbaceous that has extrafloral nectaries associated with its reproductive structures. Were evaluated as folivory rates, florivory and frugivory in 100 individuals occurring in different densities, counting the total number of leaves, flowers and fruits with and without signs of herbivory. For statistical analysis, the chi square test was used with the aid of the statistical tool BioEstat 5.0. Folivory showed higher rates in isolated individuals, however frugivory was not affected. In the study area, folivory was affected by the density, which can affect the maintenance of this species on site.
